The Church of the Advocate is currently using space at
the Chapel Hill
Kehillah, a handicapped-accessible
facility.
DIRECTIONS.
What
Is It?
The CHAPEL
HILL KEHILLAH is a Jewish Synagogue.
The word Kehillah is
Hebrew meaning "community."
We
are grateful to the People of the Kehillah
for sharing their space with us. It provides us
room to grow - with a larger
space for worship and for education. We have a storage space for
vestments, liturgical supplies and educational
supplies from week to week, allowing us to retire
the trailer for a while.
Sharing
space with the People of the Kehillah
provides many opportunities for us to learn more
about Judaism and Jewish life, and to embrace
that part of our tradition and teaching. We hope
to share programs and ministry with the people
of the Kehillah.
Respecting the Kehillah
The Church of the Advocate and the Chapel Hill
Kehillah are entering
this new chapter with a spirit of mutual respect
and a celebration of each other's faith and faith community.
To
respect the worship space of the Kehillah,
we have agreed not to have any acitivities
on their "bimah" (what we would call
the "sanctuary") at the front of the worship space (what we would
call the "nave").
The
bimah is a raised platform area, carpeted in red.
It will be especially important for the children
of the Advocate to understand this.
To
respect the Kosher customs of the Kehillah,
we have agreed to "keep Kosher" in our times of fellowship there.
The simplest way for us to do this is to refrain
from cooking with meat - no beef, no fish, no poultry.
Dairy products may be used - milk, butter, and cheese. Soups
will need to be made with vegetable stock, rather than chicken
or beef stock. Recipes are posted on the message
board.
